Callout for Board Members

SCLT is looking for motivated individuals from all backgrounds, identities and ages, who bring a diversity of skills, experience and expertise, to join our board at this exciting time in our organisation’s development. Board members provide oversight and direction to our organisation which is comprised of our members, and acts in the benefit of our community – the people of Sheffield.

We are looking to recruit a number of new board members to join our board alongside continuing members.

Who can be a Board Member and what is involved?

We are looking for board members from all backgrounds, experience, identities, ages, skills and expertise to join our board who direct our organisation on behalf of our membership, for the benefit of our community at this exciting time.

Basic Commitments

The basic commitments of a board member are as follows:

  • Representing and advocating for the interests of SCLT, our community and membership.
  • Commitment to furthering our vision, values, mission, and policies (here)
  • Availability to prepare for and attend regular board meetings (currently quarterly, in-person).
  • Expected commitment of 2.5 -3  hours of voluntary time per month.
  • Commitment to the statutory obligations of a board member as set out in our SCLT Rules.
  • To be a member of SCLT (fully registered and membership fee paid prior to our AGM).
  • We ask for a commitment of 2 years, with board members able to remain for up to 3 years.
  • Please note that being a board member is a voluntary role. 

Encouraged Candidates

We particularly encourage candidates who match (one or more) of the following:

  • Are Sheffield residents or have a strong relationship with the city.
  • Identify as and/or advocate for underrepresented identities and experiences as well as having a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • We are particularly interested in candidates with skills and expertise in the following areas:
    • Organisational development & growth
    • Financial skills & experience.
    • Economics and community wealth building.
    • Fundraising and leading successful programmes.
  • Are passionate about and motivated by helping to tackle local challenges and issues  (not just bringing professional skills and expertise)
  • Are available and willing to contribute to,  advocate for, and steer specific ‘strands’, projects, and initiatives.
  • Can help SCLT build our membership, network, partnerships and collaborations with groups and communities across the city and beyond. 

Candidates do not have to have strengths in all of these areas – if you identify with one of these key areas, please put yourself forward.

Over the coming board term we expect SCLT to undertake the following:

  • Organisational growth including development of our long-term strategy, transitioning from a start up, to a scaling up organisation.
  • Ongoing development of the direction of our pilot project.
  • Further fundraising, capacity building, as well as advocating and supporting other community organisations and activities with mutual aims.
  • Delivering and building further programmes of activities engaging our community, and building knowledge.
  • Developing a steering group to support SCLT operations, developing participation, engagement and co-design

REVIEW

Applications will be received and reviewed by a review panel made up of SCLT members. The panel will check candidates meet basic thresholds for standing for election. Following these checks, candidates will be confirmed.

CANDIDATES ELECTED BY MEMBERS

Confirmed candidates will then be presented to our membership for voting from 24th January 2025, with final votes being cast at our AGM on Saturday 1st February 2025 [time and location TBC shortly].

It is expected that candidates attend our AGM if they are available.
