February open day

We recently held an open day to connect with members, grow our working groups, and share details of the sites being investigated by our consultant team at the Union St cafe last weekened. There were a a number of interesting conversations around land use, squatting, student housing and other community land trusts, and some great discussion around the longlisted sites. We signed up more members, and building the membership is key to us (and you!) having a stronger voice in how the city might develop, who owns land, and what is needed, so please do sign up here if you…

We’ve now appointed a consultant team for this feasibility work, consisting of Archio architects, an award winning practice with retrofit, housing and CLT expertise; Arup Sheffield, bringing both local knowledge and an international reputation to Fire, MEP and Structural Engineering; WT Partnership, whose Sheffield office are our cost consultants; the Confederation of Co-operative Housing, assisting us with development models; and Paul Lancaster as a Sheffield based Property Consultant. Following briefing workshops and walks around the city centre, the team has been…

Live project

We’ve recently worked with students from the School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield’s Live Projects initiative. Over six weeks in October and November the group worked with us to develop engagement tools, interview the public and carry out a fact-finding trip to Granby Four Streets CLT in Liverpool. There were some great conversations at the public sessions around what is happening in the city centre, and housing issues in general, and we’ll be using and developing the work that the students produced to take to upcoming public events and workshops in the city

Funding!

We’re excited to announce that we have been awarded funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund. This will allow us to engage consultants to assist in development cost appraisal modelling, early feasibility studies on proposed sites, and further organisational capacity building. It’s been a busy few months behind the scenes since registering as Community Benefit Society and we’ve been developing organisational structures, getting our bank account established, and exploring how we might develop and broaden our board, and get ready for a membership offer. We’ve also comissioned research from our fantastic team from the Sheffield Hallam…

Meet the Steering Group!

Sheffield CLT has recently hosted two students as part of the University’s Workplace Insights scheme. These paid internships allowed two undergraduate students (Jingrou, studying Digital Media & Society, and Athena, a Department of Urban Studies and Planning student) to work with us on researching policy and statistics, as well as starting to interview some of our current steering group members. We’re hoping to start to put a face to the organisation, and get across some of our member’s views and reasons for involvement, through short film clips created by the interns. We’re hoping to release these on the blog and…

March Update!

There’s been a lot going on behind the scenes recently. We’ve submitted the second stage of a bid to the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund, and are hoping to start site shortlisting and feasibility work on city centre sites should this be successful, alongside getting support from the Confederation of Co-operative Housing to help us create a besoke development appraisal tool. Social enterprise Studio Polpo have also secured funding from the Sheffield Town Trust to boost their in-kind support of the CLT and help us run open events to increase membership, and we are hoping to start…
